The Mixed Media Work of Claire L. Haye
The paintings in ClaireWorks Gallery were created by artist, Claire L. Haye, using her distinct mixed media process. Visitors to the gallery find themselves captured by the complex depth and radiance of the finished works.
Claire begins the paintings in the classical manner by drawing and painting a realistic image of either a set still life or en plein air landscape. The base painting is done on Masonite board using a combination of acrylic paint, pastels, or pencil. Claire then begins to add texture and more color by incorporating thin layers of a variety of materials such as paper, separate drawings, fabric, and other elements. With each new piece of content that is glued on the base, Claire is able to develop the subtle nuance that distinguishes her fine art as she constructs the overall subject of the painting.Numerous layers of the varnish used to cover the collage elements integrate the work and give it a sense of depth and luminosity.
It takes a period of weeks to complete each painting as Claire carefully and thoughtfully builds the layers, taking time to reflect poetically and repaint and reconstruct until she feels the work is complete. The slow and deliberate process allows Claire to free associate as she works, and to add extra meaning and unexpected motifs within the image. Thus, the finished artwork is simultaneously a painting and a subtle commentary on the meaning of the image. As a result, the viewer will find his or her eye drawn into the fine patterns of the art piece and, within the minutiae, the viewer will discover details that are sometimes whimsical, sometimes spiritual, and often times provocative.
